Review:
Originally published in 1968-69, this excellent history of a specific genre had been long out-of-print. As was the fashion of the time, illustrations were in two blocks of what were quaintly called "plates". Amongst naval historian Antony Preston's many publications this is rated as probably his best work, although he always gave equal credit to co-author John Major (NOT the former UK Prime Minister!). This edition, prepared in the last year of Antony Preston's life and sadly, he did not live to see the finished product. He would have loved it. The additional illustrations - well over 100 - are presented within the text and serve to illustrate the many technical aspects and historical events discussed. Among the extras included is a fascinating description of the salving and restoration of one of the genre - HMS Gannet - to be seen at Chatham Historic Dockyard. Highly commended.
