Review:
Although this book does include interesting facts, as well as information on historical events, I did notice that Glenny omits (or simply skims over) quite major consequences of the conflict. In perhaps typical British fashion (with regards to the Balkan wars especially)he seems very keen to present the conflict as just, or as even aggression. While I hoped that a book so celebrated in the UK, and one of the most popular books on the Yugoslav war, would give me details on a wide range of events ( including the genocide of Srebrenica, the mass rape of women in Sarajevo and in other parts of Bosnia), I found this book implicitly, and dangerously, pro Serb. For a book entitled 'The Balkans' (promising rigorous information on different aspects of Yugoslavia and the war of the 1990s) it provides little about the more harrowing elements of the conflict.
As a word of warning to those who know very little about Yugoslavia, and who are looking for a less bias representation of the war, look elsewhere.
I would recommend 'Love Thy Neighbour' by Peter Mass, as well as 'Unfinest Hour', which both discuss details that many would prefer to cover up.
